Foley's Still A Hardcore Hero

Posted by Donny | Saturday, February 28, 2009

Mick Foley reached legendary status with a plunge off the top of a steel cage through a table.

But he's so much more than a hardcore legend. He's a best-selling author with tremendous insight. A good guy, a wrestler you want to see hang around for a long time. Does he plan on retiring soon?

"I already did that in 2000," he says. "I went for a year without a match when the average retirement time for wrestlers is about six weeks.

"I won't make a retirement announcement. I'll never say never again."

It seems peculiar to see Foley on TNA Impact each week, but he likes where he is.

"I had been looking back at the last several years of working a reduced schedule and I actually wanted to make more of a commitment," he says.

What did WWE boss Vince McMahon think when Foley bolted for TNA?

LEGENDS GAME OVER

"At one time, I had a really good relationship with Vince. After I almost made the move to TNA in 2005, our relationship was never the same. It was to the point where I didn't even feel comfortable going into his office and eating his food while he was in a producers' meeting.

"Making the phone call to tell him was very difficult. Within a day, on Vince's orders I'm sure, I was pulled from the Legends of Wrestlemania game."

Foley "really enjoyed" The Wrestler, the movie that has seemingly turned around actor Mickey Rourke's career.

"I was fortunate enough that I didn't have to crash-land," says Foley. "I could glide down. I had another creative outlet, doing some writing.

"I encourage (other wrestlers) to get out and talk to kids. You need a stage to do something that matters. It's like going from the toy store aisle next to Spiderman to doing nothing."

New Barack Obama WWE Gimmick

Posted by Donny | Saturday, February 28, 2009

WWE developmental wrestler Brian Jossie is doing a gimmick in Florida Championship Wrestling claiming to be the first black president of wrestling. He recently debuted the gimmick under the name "Abraham Obama Washington" and is also trying to emulate Barack Obama's appearance. As it turns out, an Ohio based independent wrestler by the name of Lamont "Action" Williams has been doing the very same "First Black President of Professional Wrestling" gimmick for about a year.

A brief bio on Lamont "Action" Williams reads: "Crooked Barack Obama Spin-Off - Since there is going to take a "Black Man" to repair this country in dispair, then it is obvious that it will take a "Black MAN" you help restore the attendance, credibility, and Entertainment value of Professional Wrestling."

He also says Presidential-like phrases in his promos including: "NEW "Black Party", "Vote or BE CHOKED" Campaign 08, "We need Change, and for change we NEED ACTION...Lamont "Action" Williams, "The Reason You watch Professional", "The Best Thing Since Wrestling", and "Greetings my fellow FANS and Constituents...."

He also wears red, white and blue tights with stars on them.

Williams has been doing the gimmick in the Cleveland All-Pro Wrestling promotion for about a year in hopes of nabbing a deal with WWE.

Young-At-Heart Nature Boy Is Turning 60 Today

Posted by Donny | Thursday, February 26, 2009

What do you get the man who has everything, has done everything, and to be him, you have to beat him?

I get a chocolate birthday cake with "Happy Birthday Ric" on top and "60" beneath it. Love the cake. But hoped 60 would be bigger. Hoped 60 would be big enough to see from a low-flying plane.

We could get everybody in the restaurant to sing "Happy Birthday."

"You do," says Ric Flair, "and I'll never talk to you again."

The Nature Boy turns 60 today.

"Can you believe it?" asks Flair.

I can't.

The year Flair was born, Harry Truman was president, 31-year-old Billy Graham completed a hugely successful tent campaign and Sam Snead won his first Masters. The most popular movie and record were – oops, movies and records had not yet been invented.

Does this mean you are now the Nature Man?

"Does that mean I'm going to grow up anytime soon?" asks Flair. "I feel like I'm 25. That's the problem."

The problem is to feel 60 when you're 25.

We open the white box at Dean & Deluca at Phillips Place, the restaurant Flair chooses for the interview, and carefully extract the dark cake. Customers see "60" and express surprise. When Flair walks to the counter to get a cup of coffee, a woman who appears older than he is comes over and looks at the number.

"Sixty?" she asks. "I thought he was 80."

"I don't feel any different," Flair says when he returns, almost everybody in the restaurant watching him. "Sixty doesn't bother me. Fifty didn't bother me. Forty did because somebody told me I'd have to stop wrestling."

Flair still works for WWE in public relations, but you know he'll wrestle again. Nobody has ever done it, professionally wrestling, as well.

Here is what 60 looks like.

Flair's face is tan, his hair is blond and he's in shape. He weighed 232 pounds when he wrestled his last match, and on Tuesday he weighs, pre-cake, 233. He works out at least four days a week and bench presses 300 pounds. He wrestles with his kids, David and Reid. It's not, however, like horsing around with your kids in the living room and letting them jump onto your back from the top of the sofa. David and Reid wrestle professionally.

Flair has four children, three grandchildren and a deep sense of peace.

"Charlotte's amazing," he says between bites of cake. "Isn't it amazing? And it just keeps getting better. The respect people have for me, the way they treat me – I wouldn't leave it for the world."

The only other athlete/icon I've encountered who so willingly embraces fans and signs autographs is Richard Petty.

Flair is not introspective. He won't wake up this morning and look back. He admits he could have made better decisions and saved more money.

"But what would I do with it?" he asks. "At the end of the day, I'm the happiest man alive."

Ever tempted to lie about your age? "Never," says Flair. "Isn't that funny? I'm at ease being myself. I never had to be anyone else."

PORTLAND, Ore. – In the stunning wake of No Way Out, an Ultimate Opportunist brings the World Heavyweight Championship back to SmackDown, a brother's hatred fuels another vicious insurgence and a restored king makes a furious decree.

Jeff Hardy def. Edge (DQ) (Non-Title Match)
After making history by competing in two Elimination Chamber matches in one night at No Way Out, new World Heavyweight Champion Edge made his gleeful return to Friday Night SmackDown. When the Rated-R Superstar denied the emerging Jeff Hardy his challenge, Hardy ridiculed the champion's relationship with his wife before hitting him with a Twist of Fate. An embarrassed Edge then told General Manager Vickie Guerrero that he would be facing Hardy later that night.

At the climax of their whirlwind match, Hardy hit Edge with the Swanton Bomb. Victory seemed imminent for the high-flying Superstar, when from out of nowhere, Matt Hardy attacked, hitting his brother with a Twist of Fate of his own. As the smoke cleared, Matt challenged an unconscious Jeff to a match next week.

J.R.'s Exclusive Interview with WWE Champion Triple H about the events on this week's Monday Night Raw
In an exclusive interview, Triple H told J.R. that when Randy Orton put his hands on his wife, Stephanie McMahon – following weeks of attacks on the McMahon family - he "crossed the line" that he can never come back from. The Game was too upset to finish the interview, ripping the microphone from his shirt and leaving without a word. However, with word that The King of Kings will be at Raw to confront Orton this Monday night, one can only speculate on the horrific ramifications that will follow.

Divas Champion Maryse & Michelle McCool def. Maria & Eve Torres (Divas Tag Team Match)
Maryse made her return to action, entering into a seemingly bittersweet tag team partnership with the foe she defeated for the Divas Championship, Michelle McCool. While Eve was mounting an offense on Maryse in the corner and the referee was distracted by getting Maria out of the ring, Michelle delivered a powerful kick to Eve's head, paving the way for Maryse to pick up the win.

World Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison have their Valentine's Day date with the Bella Twins
WWE Tag Team Champions Carlito & Primo disguised themselves as waiters to disturb the Valentine's Day date that Miz & Morrison won with Nikki & Brie Bella one week ago. But their plan ended in disaster when The Colons accidentally threw two pies into the Bella Twins' faces. Next week, Carlito and Primo will defend their Tag Team Championships against the "Dirt Sheet" duo. If Miz & Morrison can prove victorious, they will become the Undisputed Tag Team Champions.

Montel Vontavious Porter vs. United States Champion Shelton Benjamin & Chavo Guerrero (Handicap Match)
Following the sneak attack by the Gold Standard last week and post-match Frog Splash by Chavo Guerrero, MVP attempted to recruit tag team partner R-Truth to extract his revenge. However, Benjamin & Guerrero took out R-Truth as he was making his entrance, prompting the Ballin' Superstar to take both on in a Handicap Match.

When Benjamin tagged himself in just as Guerrero was closing in on the win, Chavo turned his outrage on his partner. He hit the Gold Standard with the Frog Splash before taking off, leaving MVP to execute the Drive-By on the dazed United States Champion. As a result, MVP added another victory to his winning streak as the race for the United States Championship continues to heat up.

Umaga def. Scotty Goldman
Umaga decimated Scotty Goldman as he has every Superstar that has crossed his path since his return to WWE. Despite some comical words by Goldman about his opponent Umaga prior to the match, he wasn't laughing for long. Umaga laid waste to Goldman, hitting a combination chokeslam, Samoan Spike for another impressive victory.
